Canvas and PDF

Use canvas notes and PDFs when typing is not enough

Canvas notes give the app a handwritten, sketch-friendly side. PDF support keeps reference material and working documents close to the notes they belong with.

Canvas notes

Canvas notes are for handwriting, sketching, outlining, rough planning, and diagrams. They are ideal when tapping out text is slower than thinking with a pen.

PDF workflows

PDF support is useful when the note should stay close to a document, reference sheet, or imported page rather than living as plain text only.

  • Import a PDF and write straight on it; the original stays vector, so pages stay sharp at any zoom.
  • Choose exactly which pages leave the app, then export as a vector PDF — up to 1,000 pages in a single pass — or as images.
  • Keep documents close to related planning notes.
  • Use export when a note needs to become a shareable document.

When to use each one

Use canvas notes for creating ideas. Use PDF workflows for working from existing material.

Use a canvas note when

  • You want to handwrite.
  • You need a quick sketch or diagram.
  • You are working better visually than line by line.

Use PDF workflows when

  • You already have a document to work from.
  • You want notes and documents to stay close together.
  • You need to export a finished result later.
